Tom Browning

Tom Browning Born in Ontario, Oregon in 1949, Tom Browning has been painting professionally since 1972. Starting out with western themes and wildlife as choices of subject matter, Tom has enjoyed a career of painting all subjects. Although for years there was a demand for his figurative work, he always turned back to his western paintings because of his love of the subject. Browning has used every medium to express himself, but for the past twenty-five years has painted primarily in oils. In 1994 Tom wrote an instructional book for Northlight entitled Timeless Techniques for Better Oil Paintings which was acclaimed by many schools and painting students as one of the best ever out on the market. For twenty-three years Tom’s wife, Joyce, owned and operated a publishing business producing prints and greeting cards that carved a permanent niche in the gift market. As testimony to his versatility, Tom would supply her with images of his work including unique Santa designs that earned him the reputation in the industry as the premiere Santa painter in the country. In 1997 a successful children’s book, Santa’s Time Off was published using Tom’s Santa’s as the illustrations. In 2007 Tom was commissioned by Sterling Publications of New York to produce a series of oil paintings to illustrate their new book titled ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.’ The book will be launched during the fall of 2009 with accompanying products produced by Hallmark Cards Inc. and Possible Dreams. Since becoming a member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group in 1986, Browning has been a four time recipient of the Jurors Award, and in 1994 received an Award of Excellence from the NWR Group. In 1992 and ‘93 he was invited to show at the National Academy of Western Art (NAWA) and was a frequent guest painter with the Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA). Tom is a member of the Portrait Painters Society of America, which chose him as a finalist in a 2000 competition in New York City. One of the largest works Browning has done was a commissioned triptych measuring ten feet by sixteen feet for St Mary’s Church in Boise, Idaho. It features 20 life sized figures of women of the Bible. It was installed in January 2009. In 2008 Tom was invited to participate in the Prix de West Invitational at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. At the 2009 Prix de West show he was given the honor of having his painting “The Dawn of a New Day” win the Prix de West Award. He also will be recognized with a special tile in the Edward L. Gaylord Exhibition Wing hallway, and his painting will take its rightful place in the William S. and Ann Atherton Art of the American West Gallery. In October of 2009 Tom was inducted into the Cowboy Artists of America. This is a distinct group of 26 western artists that will have their 49th Exibition and Sale at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Ocotber of 2013. This honor was no doubt the highlight of Browning’s art career to date. The most recent publications featuring Tom’s work was a book entitled “Wisdom of the West”. Published by Harvest House Publishers, this book is filled with numerous quotes from famous people, generously partnered with Browning’s paintings. Tom and his wife Joyce make their home in Cave Creek Arizona where much of the inspiration for his paintings is born.
